Rug Size and Layout
Choosing the right rug size is one of the most important decisions in a room, and one of the most commonly misunderstood. A rug that`s too small can make even a well designed space feel disconnected, while the right size anchors the furniture, defines the layout, and creates a sense of balance.
Pro tip: Use painter’s tape to outline the rug size on your floor before buying, this simple step often prevents regret!

DINING ROOMS
In the dining room the rug should always be 60-70 cm/ 24"-27.5" away from the table top to make it comfortable to pull the chairs in and out. Its always best to measure the chairs or test that all four legs will stay on the rug when pulled out.
ROUND DINING TABLES
Think about radial balance, round rugs are usually better for round tables.
If your table sits near a corner, a squared rug would work better.
SIZE
Ø200*/Ø 6'7" or 200 x 200 cm/6.5' × 6.5'
*Ø=Diameter
RECTANGULAR & OVAL DINING TABLES
Choose a rug that follows the shape of the table, an oval rug also works great under an oval dining table.
SIZING
170 x 240 cm/ 5'7" × 8'
6 PEOPLE DINING TABLE
For a six people dining table I recommend a 200 x 300 cm/6'7" × 10'. If you add chairs to the side, remember to check if the size is sufficient to hold all chairs when pulled out. If you decide to do this, a 250 x 350/8' × 11'6" would work better.
SIZING
200 x 300 cm/6'7" × 10'
250 x 350/8' × 11'6"
LIVING ROOM
It's usually better to work with the furniture layout you already have in your living room, and let that determine the shape and size of your rug. The living room rug should be big enough to hold at least the front legs of all the furniture. Ideally the rug should extend 20 cm/8" beyond the armrests of the sofa.
CORNER SOFA
If your sofa is up against a wall, having just the two front legs of your furniture should be sufficient.
Your coffee table should always be fully on the rug.
SIZING
200 x 300 cm/6'7" × 10'
250 x 350 cm/8' × 11'6"
2 & 3 SEATER SOFAS
For 2 & 3 seater sofas, the front legs should be on the rug. Choosing a small rug in the middle, doesn’t help as much with anchoring the furniture and making a distinct zone.
SIZE
2 SEATER 170 x 240 cm/8' × 11'6"
3 SEATER 200 x 300 cm/6'7" × 10'
FREE STANDING FURNITURE
If the furniture is standing in the middle of the room, the rug should have room for all of the furniture to stand on. When the furniture is free standing there should be at least 20 cm/8" of rug on each side of the sofa.
SIZE
300 x 400/6'7"× 10' OR BIGGER, this all depends on the furniture layout.
BEDROOM
In the bedroom the rug should extend far enough to align with the outer edge of the bed side tables, that is either deep enough to go under the bed side tables or cut right in front. Avoid putting the rug in the middle of the nightstands as this can make them wobbly. Pick a rug that's in proportion to the room and the bed.
SINGLE BEDS
The rug layout for single beds depends on the shape and layout of the room. Ideally the rug should follow the longest wall of the room.
SIZE
140 x 200 cm/4'7" × 6'6"
170 x 240 cm/8' × 11'6"
DOUBLE BEDS
If you have a room with plenty of space, you could consider buying a large rug to act as a visual anchor.
SIZING
SMALL DOUBLE BED (120 cm/ 47 in)
170 x 240 cm/4'7" × 6'6" or 200 x 250 cm/ 5'7" × 8'
QUEEN SIZE BED (160 cm)
200 x 300/8' x 10' or 250 x 350/9' x 12'
KING SIZE BED (180 cm)
250 x 350/8' x 11' or 300 x 400 cm/9' x 13'
DOUBLE BEDS PT.2
If you don`t have much money or room for a rug I usually recommend having either 2 small rugs on each side of the bed or a long runner at the front of the bed. This gives the amount of recommended free space but also gives you something soft to land on in the morning.
SIZING
60-90 x 180-300 cm
2'-3' x 5'11"-9'10"
The rug size depends on the length/width of your bed.
The right rug size isn’t about strict rules, its about proportion, balance, and how you live in the space. When the size and placement feel right, the entire room feels grounded and complete.
